I have always been quite fond of the Hyundai i10. While it was the Santro that did wonders for the Korean brand in the Indian market, the i10 took the ante just a bit further, with a set of more capable engines, more equipment, and appeal. The i10 too, just like the Santro, became an instant hit in the Indian market.
But when the second-generation of the i10 came, it was touted as the Grand i10 by the company itself. Blame the marketing geniuses at Hyundai, but the strategy for selling the new i10 alongside the older one gave the carmaker an advantage over its competitors, of having more options in the same segment.
Now, let’s make our way back to the present. Yet again, when the time came to introduce the third-generation of the i10, Hyundai simply named it the Grand i10 Nios. This time around too, the older Grand i10 has been kept on sale with the newer model, only with a massive discount. But, also, this time around, the i10 has grown in size and now has the Maruti Suzuki Swift in its crosshairs. Here’s a full overview.
Specifications
The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios looks chic and upmarket. Over its predecessor, the Nios gets a massive new front fascia, replete with projector setup for the headlamps and foglamps. A nice and funky touch at the front is the use of boomerang-shaped LED DRLs, which sit on the extreme ends of the sizeable Cascading grille. Moreover, the Nios also gets 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, a size larger than the older car.
As said above, the Grand i10 Nios has grown in almost every aspect over the previous-gen Grand i10. So, as far as the overall dimensions are concerned, it is 3,805mm in length, 1,680mm in width, and 1,520mm in height. The wheelbase is a respectable 2,450mm. Moreover, it has a fuel tank capacity of 37-litres.
Under the hood, the Grand i10 Nios has been upgraded with a set of BS-VI compliant engines. Apart from that, it remains mechanically unchanged in comparison to the previous-gen i10. First of the lot is a 1.2-litre four-cylinder Kappa petrol engine, which is good for 83bhp and 113Nm of torque. Next is the 1.2-litre three-cylinder diesel, which produces 74bhp and 190Nm of torque. Both come with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. There’s a CNG option, too, with the 1.2-litre petrol.
But it’s just not that for the small Hyundai has another trick up its sleeve. Last month, Hyundai also launched the Grand i10 Nios with the 1.0-litre T-GDI three-cylinder engine, which made its debut in the Venue. It churns out 99bhp and 172Nm of torque. It only comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Mileage
As expected, it’s the petrol-CNG combination of the Nios that’s the most fuel-efficient at 18.9km/kg. Next in the list is the diesel, which is good for 26.2km/l for both the transmissions. The 1.2-litre petrol, on the other hand, delivers 20.7km/l with manual transmission and 20.5km/l with the AMT transmission. The 1.0-litre T-GDI motor, lastly, delivers 20.3km/l.
Features
Since it’s a Hyundai, the Grand i10 Nios brings many segment-first features to the table. On the outside, it gets projector headlamps, projector foglamps, LED DRLs, 15-inch alloy wheels, and honeycomb mesh treatment for the taillamps.
Inside, the Nios gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple Carplay/Android Auto, climate control, steering-mounted audio controls, a 5.3-inch MID, wireless smartphone charging pad, rear air-con vents, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob. It also gets push-button start with keyless entry.
Colours
The Grand i10 Nios, as of early-2020, comes in eight shades, namely, Polar White, Typhoon Silver, Fiery Red, Titan Grey, Alpha Blue, Aqua Teal, Polar White with Black Roof, and Aqua Teal with Black Roof. Moreover, the Turbo variant gets an additional Fiery Red with Black Roof shade.
